Articles - The Best of Bean Bags Was Yet to Come
The early versions of the bean bag are fondly recalled for some of their traits, but nearly demonized for others. Overall, they have been basically banished to a time gone by. Whether that entails visions of good ole basement recreation rooms, or mod conversion vans decorated with floor to ceiling carpets, is somewhat reliant upon personal experience. Either way, they are usually pigeon holed into the 1970s era.
Sure, the fact that the seats were super easy to transport from place to place, sometimes even with people still on them, was indeed an outstanding feature. They made for an extra cosy situation if you were seated in one with someone you were romantically interested in too. And, for the time frame, the colours that covered all fluorescent shades and sports team emblems that prevailed on the bags themselves, were right on the money. However, the material was always of a cheap variety, and once the seam split the chair was a goner. You would probably never see these old beanbag in luxurious homes, fine restaurants or clubs, let alone poolside at your favorite Sheraton or manchester hotels. They just were not versatile, rugged, or visually appealing enough to be found there.
As for the negative memories of this item, mostly they reminisce about the bean bag filling. People clearly seem to remember the fact that they lost their oomph rather quickly, and some never seemed to ever even have it. If you were one of the lucky ones, you had a bean bag that supported your body for at least a couple of uses. Your frame would hover over the linoleum, or shag carpet tentatively. But whether from the outset, or sometime soon after, it appeared inevitable that the occupant would sink down to rest upon the floor beneath. This was usually the outcome of the shapeless design, poor beans filling, and inferior quality materials overall.
So, when I started to hear about the modern designer beanbags, I was duly apprehensive about them for numerous reasons. In my mind, I could only conjure up images of the beanbag duds of yore. Then I got a glimpse of some of the high-end designers marketing materials, and began to read reviews. Most notably, I saw strong sturdy lines, and a stuffing that left the models lounging comfortably high above the floor. Understandably, being a teen of the 1970s, my curiosity was peeked. I was exceptionally weary, but nonetheless my inquisitive nature prevailed.
As it turns out, upon personal review, what I found was that the fatal flaws of the past had been addressed. The contemporary bean bag involves a well formulated design that remains in tact after many uses. The bean bag filling has been reconfigured, and new materials are used to maintain the cushy feel. Though there is still a need to refill the furniture from time to time, it is much less often than the old models, and one designer has even patented a utensil to add the filling easily.
I was surprised to learn that you can not only get bean bag chairs, but bean bag loungers, sofas, ottomans and other innovative stuff. Also, depending on your budget, you can spring for real leather. Still, if that is not your style, or bag. (Sorry, had to get that pun in somewhere.) There are some super nice, durable fabrics that are available. Thus, designers have remodeled the beanbag and corrected the issues of the past that haunted it.
